Medicare is a Health Insurance Program for:
  • people 65 years of age and older
  • some people with disabilities, under 65 years of age
  • people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant)

Medicare has four parts:
  • Part A (Hospital Insurance) - most people don't have to pay for Part A
    • helps pay for inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing care following hospital stay
  • Part B (Medical Insurance) - most people pay monthly for Part B
    • helps pay for doctor’s services, outpatient hospital care
  • Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans) – includes Part A, Part B, and usually other coverage including prescription drugs
    • plans are run by private insurance companies approved by Medicare
  • Part D (Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage)
    • helps cover the cost of prescription drugs

Medigap insurance/Medicare supplement insurance is sold by private insurance companies that fill in benefit “gaps” of Original Medicare, such as out-of-pocket costs for Medicare coinsurance and deductibles, or for services not covered by Medicare. Medicare supplements are standardized and named by the letters A through L (changing to N in 2010). Each plan has a different range of coverage and varies by state.
